Bromelioideae

Bromelioideae is a subfamily of bromeliads, the Bromeliaceae family. It is the most diverse group in the family, with around 40 genera.

Most Bromelioideae are epiphytes (growing on other plants), though some are terrestrial. This group includes many plants people cultivate, such as the pineapple.

These plants usually form rosettes of leaves that catch and store water. The leaves are often spiny. They produce berry-like fruits. The ovary is located below the flower (an inferior ovary).

Taxonomy notes: about 39 named genera are recognized, plus one hybrid genus (×Hohenmea). Some sources treat another genus as an artificial hybrid. In 2021, Hylaeaicum was separated from Neoregelia.
