2019 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship final
The 2019 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship Final was played at Croke Park, Dublin, on 18 August 2019. Tippe rary won their 28th title, beating Kilkenny 3-25 to 0-20. Noel McGrath was named Man of the Match. The attendance was 82,300 and the weather was changeable, with rain during the game.
In a game that started wet and then cleared at times, Kilkenny opened the scoring with a TJ Reid free, but Tipperary soon answered. A straight red card to Kilkenny’s Richie Hogan after a high tackle on Cathal Barrett reduced Kilkenny to 14 players in the first half. At half-time, Tipperary led 1-9 to 0-11.
In the second half, Tipperary pulled away with goals from Seamus Callanan and John O’Dwyer. Callanan struck twice in the second half, bringing his tally for the championship to eight, and O’Dwyer added the third goal as Tipperary extended their lead. The final score was 3-25 to 0-20.
After the match, Tipperary captain Seamus Callanan lifted the Liam MacCarthy Cup from GAA president John Horan as players celebrated with a lap of honour around Croke Park. Callanan spoke of the dream coming true, and manager Liam Sheedy paid tribute to his family. Kilkenny boss Brian Cody said he was surprised by the red card decision. Some former Kilkenny players argued the red card should not have been given, and Richie Hogan defended his view that it should never have been a red.
The match highlighted a standout performance from Callanan and saw Noel McGrath win the man-of-the-match award. Highlights and analysis aired on RTÉ, while the victory led to a big homecoming for Tipp at Semple Stadium in Thurles.
