Nada (1974 film)
Nada is a 1974 Franco-Italian political thriller directed by Claude Chabrol, based on Jean-Patrick Manchette’s novel Nad a. It stars Fabio Testi, Maurice Garrel, Mariangela Melato and Michel Duchaussoy. The film, also known as The Nada Gang in the United States, follows a small, violent anarchist group named Nada.
Plot in simple terms:
- Nada plans to kidnap the United States Ambassador to France to demand a ransom. Some group members are reluctant, but a teacher named Treuffais refuses to participate.
- The kidnapping happens at a brothel the Ambassador visits. During the operation, a police officer and an undercover agent are killed.
- The French Interior Minister orders Commissioner Goémond to locate the group. He believes killing the hostage could turn public opinion against the Left.
- In the Nada hideout, all members die except Diaz, who shoots the hostage and escapes.
- Goémond captures Treuffais and questions him violently. He later waits for Diaz in Treuffais’s apartment, sure Diaz will show up.
- In the final shootout, both Goémond and Diaz are killed. Treuffais phones a newspaper to offer the full story of Nada.
Style and themes:
- Nada is a cool, hard-edged political thriller. It contrasts the ideological confusions of the terrorists with the authorities’ willingness to use violence and manipulate public opinion. It’s noted for its tense atmosphere and stark depiction of power and violence.
Reception:
- French critics were cautious at first; some dismissed it as weak, while others praised its cinematography. In the United States, reviews were mixed: The New York Times found it muddled but with strong visuals and performances, though it relied on clichés; The Village Voice’s Andrew Sarris criticized it as style over substance.
- Some critics, like Tom Milne of Time Out, called Nada one of Chabrol’s best films and a chilling political thriller. Later writers have seen it as a sharp study of bourgeois weakness and moral ambiguity, blending suspense with social critique.
