Broad Margin
Broad Margin is a house in Greenville, South Carolina. It was commissioned by Gabrielle and Charlcey Austin, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, and built in 1954 by Harold T. Newton. It is one of only two Wright-designed buildings in South Carolina, the other being Auldbrass Plantation. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
The home sits on a 2-acre lot that slopes and features 12-inch-thick concrete walls. Cypress wood is used throughout, including a cypress ceiling and specially designed cypress furniture. The polished red concrete floors include copper tubes to heat the house with hot water. Doors and window frames are made on site from cypress, and the hardware is solid brass. Wright signed his name on a block embedded in the house.
Broad Margin was documented by the Historic American Buildings Survey in 1988 with photographs and historical notes.
