Dale-Gudbrand's farm
Dale-Gudbrands gard is a historic farm in Hundorp, Sør-Fron municipality, in the Gudbrandsdalen valley of eastern Norway. In 1999 it was chosen as the millennium site for Oppland county and for Sør-Fron.
The farm sits in the middle of an Iron Age burial area. Five large grave mounds used to be there; now four remain, each about 23–32 meters across, making them some of the largest in the Gudbrand Valley. There are also rings of stones at the site, and two more mounds at the nearby Hjetlund farm.
Old Norse stories in the Heimskringla describe a meeting in 1021 between Olaf II (later Saint Olaf) and Dale-Gudbrand at the farm. Olaf tricked Dale-Gudbrand and his followers into looking toward the sunrise to see their new God, while one of Olaf’s men, Kolbein the Strong, broke Thor’s statue with his club. This event helped bring Christianity to the Gudbrand Valley, and Dale-Gudbrand later had to build a church on his farm. Kolbein the Strong’s club is also shown on the coat of arms for Sør-Fron.
