Brian Swibel
Brian Swibel, often credited as B. Swibel, is an American writer, producer, director and activist who works across theater, film and television. He was born in Evanston, Illinois, and studied at the Goodman School of Drama (BFA). As a teenager he grew up near Chicago, studied at The Piven Theater Workshop, and moved to Running Springs, California at 15, where he wrote his first play, Children of the Moon. He later returned to Chicago to apprentice at The Goodman Theatre.
Swibel’s early creative work includes short films such as Sunset Town, which premiered at the Lake Placid Film Festival and played around the world, and Fault, which screened at many festivals and was showcased by Kodak at the Cannes Film Festival. He also created the NBC project Forbidden Fruit, an anthology based on Civil Rights-era stories, with Stevie Wonder and the non-fiction book by Betty DeRamus.
In theater, Swibel has been a producer and creator for numerous Broadway shows. His productions include Moulin Rouge! The Musical, An American in Paris, Oh, Hello on Broadway, You’re Welcome America: A Final Night with George W. Bush, Beetlejuice, The New One, King Kong, The Performers, The Seagull, Amelie and Xanadu. Off-Broadway credits include My Daughter Keeps Our Hammer and Family Secrets. He has also supported regional and touring productions of Xanadu, Amelie, An American in Paris, and Moulin Rouge! The Musical.
Swibel has expanded his work to television, film and online series. His TV projects include Oh, Hello on Broadway (Netflix), You’re Welcome America: A Final Night with George W. Bush (HBO), An American in Paris (PBS), and The New One (Netflix). He produced Kiss The Ground, a Netflix documentary narrated by Woody Harrelson, released in 2020. He created and produced web series such as Cubby Bernstein and The Trumpty Dumpty Cycle, which featured many famous actors and drew attention online.
He co-founded Triptyk Studios, a company that develops theater, film, television, web series and social justice events. The studio has produced major Broadway shows like Moulin Rouge! The Musical, King Kong, Beetlejuice, The New One, Amelie and Oh, Hello on Broadway, among others, and has worked on projects such as Kiss the Ground, The Trumpty Dumpty Cycle and United to Save the Vote. The studio blends entertainment with activism and community engagement.
Swibel serves in public-interest roles, including as a member of RepresentUs’ Cultural Counsel and as a board member of Every Last One, an organization advocating for immigrant families and migrant children. He helped organize the United to Save The Vote virtual event and has supported other social-justice initiatives.
