Dai Nicholas
Dai Nicholas was a Welsh footballer born in Aberdare on 12 August 1897. He played as a winger in the English League for Merthyr Town, Swansea Town and Stoke, totaling 251 league appearances and 19 goals, with later spells at Aberavon Athletic and Swansea Town. He represented Wales at schoolboy level in 1912 and earned three senior caps between 1921 and 1927. His career was interrupted by World War I, when he served in the Royal Navy. After the war he briefly played as an amateur for Swansea before turning professional with Merthyr and training to become a teacher at Carmarthen Training College. In 1921 he joined Stoke and was known as a speedy winger; homesickness brought him back to Swansea Town in 1924, where he also taught in Aberdare. He passed away on 7 April 1982 in Aberdare.
