Brenham (meteorite)

Brenham is a rare pallasite meteorite found near Haviland in Kiowa County, Kansas, United States. Pallasites are a mix of metal and crystals, and Brenham shows yellowish olivine crystals (peridot) when cut and polished. It is linked to the Haviland Crater.

The meteorite was found in 1882, and it fell long ago (about 10,000–20,000 years ago) but was not observed falling. In 1949, collector H.O. Stockwell discovered a mass of about 453.6 kilograms, known as The Space Wanderer, which is on display at The Big Well in Greensburg, Kansas. In October 2005, geologist Philip Mani and meteorite hunter Steve Arnold found the largest Brenham fragment yet—about 650 kilograms. This piece is an oriented pallasite, meaning its shape kept a stable orientation during entry, and it is the third largest of its type in the world. The 650 kg mass is in a private collection in Texas.

Brenham is classified as an anomalous pallasite (Pallasite-an). A large collection of Brenham meteorites, totaling about 8,500 pounds, used to be at the Kansas Meteorite Museum and Nature Center in Haviland (now closed).
