James Blanchard (scientist)

James Blanchard is a Canadian physician and scientist. He is a professor of Community Health Science at the University of Manitoba and holds a Canada Research Chair in Epidemiology and Global Public Health.

His work includes HIV/AIDS research and public health programs in India and other parts of South Asia. From 2001 to 2007, he lived in Bangalore, India, where he helped build and lead the university’s HIV research and public health program. He has advised national HIV programs in India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, and the World Bank.

In Manitoba, Blanchard has collaborated with researchers to study inflammatory bowel disease, including how common it is, who is affected, and what causes it.

Education and early career: He earned an M.D. from the University of Manitoba in 1986 and did an internship at Manitoba Teaching Hospitals. He worked as a general practitioner with the University of Manitoba’s Northern Medical Unit in Fisher Branch for two years. He then earned a Master of Public Health in 1990 and a Ph.D. in Epidemiology in 1997 from Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health.

Current roles: He is a professor in the Departments of Community Health Sciences and Medical Microbiology and the director of the University of Manitoba’s Centre for Global Public Health. He received a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Epidemiology and Global Public Health in 2004.

Awards: He has received awards including the Frederick G. Banting Award from the Canadian Diabetes Association and the 2006 Rh Award for Health Sciences from the Winnipeg Rh Institute Foundation.
