Bogd Khan Mountain
Bogd Khan Mountain, also known as Bogd Khan Uul, is a mountain in Mongolia that overlooks the capital city, Ulaanbaatar, from the south. It reaches 2,261 metres (7,418 feet) above sea level.
Geography
The mountain is located in Mongolia, as part of the Khentii Mountains. It lies within the Bogd Khan Uul Biosphere Reserve and is one of Mongolia’s sacred mountains.
History and culture
Bogd Khan Mountain has long been considered sacred. It is linked to Zanabazar, a famous Mongolian religious leader who is said to have meditated near a tree called Janchivsembe in the Nukht Valley of Bogd Khan Uul.
In 1778, the Qing dynasty approved official annual worship ceremonies for the mountain, recognizing its importance to the people.
World Heritage context
Bogd Khan Mountain, along with Burkhan Khaldun and Otgontenger, was added to Mongolia’s UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List on August 6, 1996, in the Cultural category.
