Bloomfield Academy (Skowhegan, Maine)
Bloomfield Academy is a historic former school building at 33 Main Street in Skowhegan, Maine, near the old First Baptist Church. Built in 1840 by local builder Asa Dyer, it is a fine example of Greek Revival architecture.
The two-story brick building has a gabled roof, granite trim and foundation, and a distinctive two-stage tower. The main east-facing façade is three bays wide with a central double-door entry sheltered by a hood, sash windows on both levels, and a semi-oval window in the gable.
The school began as Canaan Academy, chartered in 1807 as a private school. It was renamed in 1819 when the town's name changed, and Bloomfield was annexed to Skowhegan in 1861. The current building replaced the original wood-frame structure. The school eventually merged into Skowhegan public schools, and the building is now owned by the Trustees of Bloomfield Academy. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on February 19, 1982.
