Prop 32 was a California ballot measure decided on November 6, 2012. It would have banned automatic payroll deductions from employees’ paychecks for political contributions and spending. Instead, workers would need to opt in to any political deductions from their pay. Supporters said the measure would give workers control over their money and reduce the influence of unions that rely on payroll deductions. Opponents argued it would weaken working people’s political voice and mainly benefit corporations. Unions could still contribute from their own funds and mobilize members, but payroll-deduction funding would end. Critics noted exemptions for some business structures, which they said would favor those interests. The measure was defeated, with No 56.60% and Yes 43.40% of the votes (about 12.44 million total).
