Bionic Commando (1992 video game)
Bionic Commando is a 1992 Game Boy platform game developed by Minakuchi Engineering and published by Capcom. It’s an adaptation of the NES version, but it shifts the setting from present-day to a futuristic sci-fi world. The game has been re-released on the Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console in 2011 and on Nintendo Classics in November 2025.
Plot and setting:
You play as Rad Spencer (Ladd in the NES version), an agent of the FF Corps. Your mission is to rescue ally Super Joe from the Doraize Army and stop their leader Wiseman (Killt in the NES version) from a secret project called Albatross. The story adds more cinematic opening and ending sequences and includes more in-game dialogue, giving it a stronger narrative feel. The enemies wear futuristic armor and the military theme is replaced with sci-fi elements.
Gameplay:
Players travel the overworld map to reach levels, using a transport helicopter called the DX-3 Turbocopter. Unlike the NES game’s top-down vehicle encounters, the Game Boy version keeps those encounters side-scrolling along with the rest of the game.
