The United States Armed Forces Institute (USAFI) was part of the U.S. military and focused on education. It started in April 1942 as the Army Institute. From 1942 to 1974, USAFI offered education to service members across the United States and overseas, including GED preparation, college-level exams, and USAFI Courses in the Caribbean, Europe, Hawaii, and Japan. From May to September 1945, more than 93,000 students enrolled in free USAFI classes in the European Theater of Operations. The headquarters were in Madison, Wisconsin, at 102 North Hamilton Street.
