Billy the Kid (film series)
The Billy the Kid film series is a set of 42 Westerns released by the Poverty Row studio Producers Releasing Corporation (PRC) from 1940 to 1946. The first six films star Bob Steele as Billy the Kid. After Steele left PRC for Republic Pictures, the next 13 films feature Buster Crabbe as Billy the Kid, and the following 23 films star Crabbe again as the same character, renamed “Billy Carson.” All 42 films were directed by Sam Newfield. Al St. John plays the sidekick “Fuzzy” Jones in every film; he also played the same character in the Lone Rider series (1941–1943). Carleton Young appears as Billy’s friend Jeff Travis in the first five entries. Each movie was shot in about 10–12 days on roughly a $25,000 budget.
