On February 29, 2024, soldiers from Burkina Faso’s armed forces killed up to 150 civilians in the villages of Bibgou and Soualimou in Komondjari Province. About 40 people were injured and taken to Gayéri for treatment. A survivor said the attack began around 2 pm, first targeting Fulani homes, then the Gourmantché homes that remained in the town. Civilians were told to line up in the street, where they were shot. A video released on March 4 showed dozens of bodies in the street.

Context: This occurred amid a long-running jihadist conflict in northern Burkina Faso, led by Jama'at Nasr al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) and the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS). ISGS operates mainly near the Mali–Niger–Burkina Faso border. Since a 2022 coup, the government and local militias have conducted deadly raids on civilian areas, killing hundreds. Four days earlier, after jihadist attacks and military operations in Ouahigouya and the Est Region, authorities said at least 220 civilians were killed in Nondin, Soro, and nearby villages. RFI quoted officials saying they had no knowledge of the Bibgou–Soualimou killings.
