Beyond the Darkness (film)
Beyond the Darkness (Buio Omega) is a 1979 Italian exploitation horror film directed by Joe D’Amato. It stars Kieran Canter, Cinzia Monreale, Franca Stoppi, and Sam Modesto. The story follows Francesco Koch, a wealthy, orphaned taxidermist who inherits a house in the woods. His housekeeper Iris wants to run the place and marry him, so she hires a witch to curse Francesco’s fiancée, Anna. Anna dies after the curse, and Francesco preserves her body, which fuels his growing spree of murders connected to his obsession with Anna. A mortician and Anna’s twin sister Teodora become involved as more grisly events unfold at the isolated villa. The film is known for its graphic gore and bizarre twists, ending with Francesco and Iris dead and Teodora surviving, though she’s mistaken for Anna by the mortician and placed in a coffin to be buried.
The movie is a remake of the 1966 film The Third Eye. It was shot in two weeks in South Tyrol (Brixen and Sand in Taufers) in 1979. The score was composed by Goblin, and the special effects used practical materials like animal parts. D’Amato has said the goal was to create strong visceral shocks rather than suspense.
Beyond the Darkness was released in Italy on 15 November 1979 and earned about 153.7 million lire, a modest box office for the time. It gained many alternate titles abroad, most notably Beyond the Darkness. In the United States, a version titled Buried Alive appeared in 1984–1985 and altered some names and footage. Italy re-released it in 1987 as In quella casa Buio omega to ride the wave of The Evil Dead, and it was marketed in Spain and Mexico under other franchise-like titles.
Critics and scholars view it as one of D’Amato’s more infamous horror efforts: praised by some as one of his strongest gore-driven works, but still described as cheap exploitation. Contemporary writers note its shocking content and sensational style as defining traits of the film.
