Belt Mathai is a 1983 Indian Malayalam film directed by T. S. Mohan, with a story and screenplay by Peruvaram Purushan and Velliman Vijayan. It stars Sukumaran, Adoor Bhasi, Jose Prakash, Ratheesh, Lalu Alex, and Krishnachandran, with music by Raveendran. The film was released on 25 April 1983.

The story follows Mathai, also known as Mathews, who is released from prison after being jailed for the murder of his pregnant sister. He returns home to memories of his sister’s death and his father’s sorrow. In town, a rich criminal named Alexander and his goons extort local traders. Mathai helps Pokker Ikka, who runs a hotel and shop, and Pokker’s daughter Amina loves a poor peanut seller named Khadar. Mathai faces trouble with the law again but is rescued by a sympathetic lawyer, Indrapalan, and by his old college friend, police officer Rajashekharan.

The men were college mates in the past: Mathews wrote poetry, Indrapalan became a lawyer, and Rajashekharan tried to win over Rani. As Alexander’s schemes create trouble, Mathai and his friends try to stop him. Alexander abducts Geetha, Rajashekharan’s sister, but Mathai rescues her. Indrapalan falls for Geetha and tries to help, while Alexander arranges a marriage between his widow daughter Cicily and a vigilant officer Tony to shield his crimes. Tony is killed, making Cicily a widow.

Meanwhile, Mathai helps Khadar and Amina’s marriage; Roy, Alexander’s son, rapes and kills Amina, and Mathai kills Roy in revenge. Rajashekharan arrests Roy and plans to testify against Mathai, while Indrapalan defends Mathai to secure bail. Alexander traps Indrapalan, straining loyalties and friendships, and Geetha’s love wanes. The film ends with a series of killings and a sad, dramatic conclusion. The music for Belt Mathai was composed by Raveendran, with lyrics by Poovachal Khader.
