Belizean Writers and Poets Society
Belizean Writers and Poets Society is a Belizean literary group started in 2005 to promote Belizean writing and poetry. It registered in August 2005 as the Belizean Poets Society and was officially launched in Belize City on September 8, 2005 by six founders: Adele Ramos (Amandala), Ansel West, Margaret Arana, Police Superintendent Edward Broaster, Erwin X (Jones), and Orson Elrington. Its goal was to help Belizean poets improve their skills, develop poetry as an art, and boost appreciation for poetry among Belizeans. In 2008 the group opened to all writers and became the Belizean Writers and Poets Society. The Society holds an annual Poets Competition during Belize’s September Celebrations, along with smaller events and exhibitions. Members such as Ramos, Erwin X, Kalilah Enriquez, and Edward Broaster are published poets who are often invited to read at important ceremonies.
