Bedem ljubavi – Mothers for Peace is a women’s NGO formed in early 1991 to protest drafting Croats and other ethnic groups into the Yugoslav People's Army (JNA) as Slovenia and Croatia started to declare independence. The group organized protests around JNA barracks starting August 29, 1991, which lasted four days and drew tens of thousands of people. Members traveled to Belgrade to demand the release of the conscripts. On September 3, representatives went to the European Commission in Brussels to ask for international recognition of Croatia to help prevent the war from getting worse.
