Pic des Spijeoles
Pic des Spijeoles is a high peak in the French Pyrenees, reaching 3,065 meters (10,056 feet). It lies near the spa town of Bagnères-de-Luchon, on the border between the Hautes-Pyrénées and Haute-Garonne departments in the Midi-Pyrénées region. The name comes from Gascon words meaning “small streams.” The first ascent of the normal route was on June 30, 1880, by Henry Russell and guide Firmin Barrau. The usual route starts from the Granges d'Astau and goes via the Refuge d'Espingo. It is a long hike that is not technically difficult, but can be challenging in fog and for less experienced walkers; many people stay at the refuge overnight to complete it. The summit offers fantastic views of the central Pyrenees and the Luchon valley. In 1906, a climber from Luchon died in a fall at La Brèche des Spijeoles.
