Bed skirt
A bed skirt is a decorative fabric that sits between the mattress and the box spring and hangs down to the floor around the bed. It hides the bed frame, wheels, and any clutter under the bed, and it helps protect the under-bed area from dust. It also adds a finished look to the room.
History in brief: Bed skirts appeared in the early 1900s, while valances go back to the late 1700s. Initially, they were practical—blocking drafts and concealing bed parts. By the 1920s–30s, more decorative styles became popular as bedrooms were furnished more fancifully. In the 1940s, bedspreads and valances were fashionable, and in children’s rooms they hid toys under the bed. From the 1970s–80s, the term “dust ruffle” gave way to “bed skirt.” Since the 1980s, bed skirts have remained common in many bedrooms, though minimalist styles later dominated.
Today: Many bed skirts are tailored or pleated. They come in various designs and sizes, and popular brands have offered them over the years. With thicker modern mattresses, some people use them less often, since the top of the mattress can sit higher.
Types: There are several designs. A base valance sits under the mattress and covers the bottom of the bed. A sheet valance fits over the mattress and acts like a fitted sheet while also serving as a bed skirt. Some bed skirts are adjustable to fit different mattress sizes.
