Bavarian Iron Route
The Bavarian Iron Route is a 120-kilometre holiday route in southern Germany that links many historic iron- and industry-related sites, along with cultural and natural monuments. It follows centuries of iron work along old transport routes. The route is part of the Central European Iron Route, organized by the Mining History Association of Austria (based in Leoben). Members from Germany, Austria, Hungary, Slovakia, Poland, Romania, Slovenia and Italy participate. The Council of Europe has recognized it as the cultural route for Europe’s iron industry.
The journey runs south from Pegnitz in Upper Franconia through the Upper Palatinate to Regensburg, connecting former iron centers in East Bavaria—Pegnitz, Auerbach, Edelsfeld, Sulzbach-Rosenberg and Amberg. From Regensburg, about 60 kilometres continue along the waterways of the Vils and Naab to their confluence with the Danube.
