Battle of Talahandak (2020)

The Battle of Talahandak took place on 3 June 2020 in northern Mali as part of the Mali War. French special forces, with U.S. support, conducted a targeted operation to kill Abdelmalek Droukdel, the leader of al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM).

Background
French special forces, with help from the CIA and DGSE, had tracked Droukdel to the Tessalit area near the Algeria–Mali border. After two days of signal scanning, authorities identified a location in the Ourdjane wadi, about 2–5 kilometers south of the village of Talahandak, as a possible AQIM gathering.

Battle
About 15 French special operators used Caracal helicopters, a Tiger helicopter, a Gazelle helicopter, and an MQ-9 Reaper drone. Weather conditions forced some ground operating during daylight. AQIM’s group, including Droukdel and senior AQIM leader Toufik Chaib (in charge of propaganda and coordination with Jama’at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin), was in a white SUV and had set up a bivouac near Ourdjane.

The militants attempted to flee but were forced to counterattack, triggering a close-quarters firefight with French forces. Four AQIM jihadists were killed, including Droukdel and Chaib, while the SUV’s driver surrendered and was captured.

Aftermath
On 5 June 2020, French Defence Minister Florence Parly announced on Twitter the death of Abdelmalek Droukdel and called the operation a major success for peace and stability in the region. The U.S. Africa Command confirmed the death through its own channels, and French reporting also cited official confirmation. AQIM later acknowledged Droukdel’s death in a video published about two weeks later.

Context and significance
French officials suggested Droukdel may have been traveling to meet Iyad Ag Ghaly, head of JNIM, when he was killed. The operation marked a significant blow to AQIM and was presented as a major achievement in the broader fight against extremism in the Sahel. The mission also highlighted ongoing cooperation between French forces and their international partners in the region.
