Battle of Atenquique
Battle of Atenquique
The Battle of Atenquique happened on July 2, 1858, during the Reform War, near the Atenquique canyon in Jalisco, Mexico. Liberal forces led by General Santos Degollado fought Conservative troops commanded by General Miguel Miramón.
The sides were closely matched and suffered heavy losses. Liberals had about 1,200 troops; Conservatives about 1,500. Casualties were roughly 700 on the liberal side and 611 on the conservative side.
Most historians see it as a conservative victory, with Miramón’s forces taking control of Jalisco. Degollado’s string of defeats earned him a reputation in some accounts as the "Hero of the Defeats."
