Battal Gazi Destanı
Battal Gazi Destanı (Battal Ghazi Legend) is a 1971 Turkish historic action film directed by Atıf Yılmaz, written by Ayşe Şasa, and produced by Memduh Ün. It stars Cüneyt Arkın and several other actors. The story follows Battal Gazi, the legendary Muslim commander of Malatya, who seeks revenge after his father Hüseyin Gazi is killed by three Byzantine warlords. Battal defeats two of them, but the last is the Byzantine Emperor Leon. On his journey, he meets Hammer, the greatest Christian knight; after a duel, Hammer loses and converts to Islam, becoming Battal’s friend. The movie uses the era’s classic Turkish cinema style: Byzantines are shown as villains, battles against large armies are common, and there are fancy medieval costumes. It’s also famous for memorable quotes, including "Ben senin kancık kelleni ödlek bedeninden ayırmaya geldim!" The film is sometimes noted for depicting Battal as Turcoman, though some sources place him as Arab; Malatya wouldn’t come under Turkic control until the Seljuk era. Battal Gazi Destanı is the first film in a four-film Battal Gazi series and is part of the wave of historical Turkish cinema from the late 1960s to the early 1980s. The movie runs 85 minutes and is in Turkish.
