Bassett Green
Bassett Green is a residential suburb of Southampton, England. It grew from the old village of Basset and is part of the Bassett ward. The area includes a mix of Herbert Collins houses and council estates known as the Flowers Estate (Flower Roads) and Leaside Way Estate. Key places include a community centre on Honeysuckle Road, Bassett Green Primary School, Southampton Crematorium, and some of the University of Southampton’s halls of residence. Nearby areas are Bassett to the west, North Stoneham to the north, Swaythling to the east and southeast, and Highfield to the southwest. Bassett Green is split between two church parishes: North Stoneham & Bassett and Swaythling. The name comes from a Basset family who lived in the area in the 15th century. It was once called Stoneham Common on old maps, and a part of the old Bassett village appeared near today’s Bassett Green Village in 1810. In the late 18th century it became a retreat for wealthy people outside Southampton, and by 1897 the area had been renamed Bassett Green. As part of the Southampton Civic Centre project, a social housing estate was built between Swaythling and Bassett Green, now known as the Flowers Estate with botanical street names. Cantell Secondary School on Violet Road serves the area; it’s a maths and computing college and was largely rebuilt under a Private Finance Initiative.
