Basel Christian Church of Malaysia
Basel Christian Church of Malaysia (BCCM) is a Protestant Lutheran church in Malaysia. It is based in Sabah and Labuan, with mission churches in Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia. It originated in 1925 as the Borneo Self-Governing Basel Church, part of the Basel Mission, and became the Basel Christian Church of Malaysia in 1963 when Sabah joined Malaysia. In 1973 it joined the Lutheran World Federation (LWF).
The church has two main branches: Chinese-language congregations and Bahasa Malaysia (BCCM-BM) for native Sabah communities. BCCM-BM has about 22,000 members in six districts and around 90 congregations, including in Kuala Lumpur. Overall, BCCM has about 64,500 baptized members and over 110 congregations.
The current bishop is Rev. Dr. Wong Fui Kong (since 2024) and the president is Fung Yin Khun. The church runs education and training programs, including Sabah Theological Seminary (the first Bahasa Malaysia seminary in Malaysia), three secondary schools and twelve primary schools, plus other institutions and kindergartens.
Historically, Basel Mission began in the 19th century, with missions to China and Hong Kong and the establishment of churches in Sabah such as the Lausan Church (1886). The church was self-governing from 1925, endured wartime losses during World War II, received aid from the Lutheran World Federation after the war, and expanded Bumiputra missions from the 1970s, building many native Sabah congregations.
The BCCM's mission statement emphasizes light and unity in Christ, and it continues to run mission schools that welcome students from all backgrounds. The official website is bccm.org.my.
