Hamar Weyne, Mogadishu
Hamar Weyne, also known as Xamar Weyne, is a neighbourhood in the Banaadir region of southeastern Somalia, inside Mogadishu. It is one of the city’s oldest areas; until 1938 Mogadishu was mainly made up of Shingani and Hamar Weyne. The Somali word "xamar" means tamarind tree. Although small, Hamar Weyne is famous for its many mosques and madrasahs, with more than 25 mosques in the district. The area is led by a local neighbourhood commissioner, Cabdulkadir Maxamed Cabdulkadir, and operates on East Africa Time (UTC+3).
