Avenel-Hillandale was a census-designated place in Maryland’s Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties used for the 1970 census. It included the communities of Avenel, Hillandale, and Adelphi. In 1970, about 19,520 people lived in 3.5 square miles, a density of around 5,600 people per square mile. In 1980, the area was reorganized into the separate CDPs of Hillandale and Adelphi. The ZIP codes are 20783 and 20903, and the area is served by area codes 301 and 240. It sits at about 39.0130°N, 76.9783°W, bordered by Silver Spring to the west, White Oak to the north, Beltsville to the northeast, Langley Park to the southwest, and College Park to the southeast.
