Robert Blocker
Robert Blocker (born September 4, 1946) is an American classical pianist, music educator, and university administrator. He served as Dean of the Yale School of Music from 1995 to 2005, and then as the Henry and Lucy Moses Dean of Music at Yale from 2006 to 2023. He was also Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Southern Methodist University from 2005 to 2006.
Blocker has led several other music schools: dean of the College of Music at UNC Greensboro from 1981 to 1983, dean at Baylor University from 1983 to 1988, dean of the College of Music from 1988 to 1991, founding dean of the School of the Arts and Architecture from 1991 to 1995, and Dean of the Yale School of Music from 1995 to 2005.
Education and background: Blocker earned a BA from Furman University in 1968, and both the Master of Music (1970) and Doctor of Musical Arts (1972) from the University of North Texas College of Music, where he studied with pianist Richard Brannan Cass. He is a Steinway artist.
