Bad Wolf Ltd. is a Cardiff, Wales-based television production company founded in 2015 by Julie Gardner and Jane Tranter after they left BBC Worldwide. It has produced The Night Of, Beddgelert, A Discovery of Witches, His Dark Materials, and Doctor Who (since 2023). The name nods to the Bad Wolf storyline from the relaunched Doctor Who. The company’s key people are Julie Gardner (founder), Jane Tranter (CEO), and Natasha Hale (COO). It operates Wolf Studios Wales and Bad Wolf America (30% stake). Since 2021, its parent is Sony Pictures Television International Production.

Highlights from its history include a first-look deal with HBO in 2015, the opening of Wolf Studios Wales in 2017, and The Night Of earning 13 Emmy nominations with five wins. That year also saw investment from Sky Group and HBO for minority stakes. His Dark Materials premiered to about seven million viewers, the biggest debut for a new British series in more than five years. In 2020, Bad Wolf announced I Hate Suzie starring Billie Piper. In 2021, BBC Studios said Bad Wolf would co-produce Doctor Who from 2023, with Davies as showrunner and Gardner as executive producer. Later in 2021, Sony Pictures Television acquired a majority stake, with Natasha Hale joining, in a deal that established a long-term partnership to boost Cardiff’s entertainment industry.
