Bogota is a small borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, located along the Hackensack River. It has about 9,000 residents (8,778 in 2020; an estimated 9,606 in 2023). Bogota was incorporated on November 14, 1894, during a period when many towns split from larger townships. It was named after the Bogert family (with possible ties to the Banta family). The name is pronounced buh-GOH-tə.

Geography and community character: Bogota covers about 0.8 square miles, mostly land. It borders Hackensack to the west, Ridgefield Park to the south, and Teaneck to the north and east. The CSX River Line runs through the town, dividing it into a busier, eastern industrial side and a quieter western, mostly residential side.

Government: Bogota uses the common borough form of New Jersey government, with a mayor and six council members, all elected at large. The mayor presides and can veto, with the council able to override. As of 2024, Mayor Daniele Fede (Republican) serves a term through 2027.

Education: The Bogota Public Schools serve pre-K through 12th grade in four schools: E. Roy Bixby (PreK–5), Lillian M. Steen (PreK–5), Bogota Middle School (6–7), and Bogota High School (8–12). Steen School was named a National Blue Ribbon School in 2020. Students may also attend Bergen County Technical Schools for specialized programs.

Transportation: Major roads include Interstate 80 at the southern edge and nearby Route 4. NJ Transit buses connect Bogota to Hackensack, New York City, and other areas. Passenger rail service to Bogota ended in 1966, but freight lines still run along the river, with a proposal to restore passenger service in the corridor.
