Backgrounding

Content sourced from Wikipedia, licensed under CC BY-SA 3.0.

Backgrounding is a middle stage in cattle farming that occurs after weaning and before entering a feedlot. During this phase, calves are fed mostly forage (such as pasture or hay) with some grain to gain weight and build disease resistance before finishing in a feedlot. Some operations specialize in backgrounding.
