BMW iX
The BMW iX is BMW’s mid‑size, all‑electric luxury SUV. It began production in 2021 (for 2022 model years) and is built in Dingolfing, Germany. As BMW’s flagship electric model in the i line, the iX uses a fifth‑generation electric drive system and focuses on technology, efficiency, and comfort.
Power and range
The iX uses dual electric motors for all‑wheel drive and runs on a 400‑volt battery system. There are several battery options, roughly in the 70–105 kWh usable range, giving WLTP ranges up to about 701 km (436 miles). It features strong regenerative braking with adaptive modes and levels you can adjust for one‑pedal driving.
Charging
DC fast charging supports up to about 150–200 kW depending on the version, letting 10–80% be charged in under 40 minutes. At home, an 11 kW charger can fully charge from empty in about 11 hours.
Design and engineering
The iX sits on a dedicated electric platform with a lightweight aluminum spaceframe and CFRP components. Its low, aerodynamic profile (Cd of around 0.25, CdA about 0.71 m²) helps boost range. The body blends high‑strength steel, aluminum, thermoplastics and CFRP to keep weight down. The car features a large, fixed grille that houses sensors for driver assistance and a self‑healing coating to protect those sensors.
Interior and technology
Inside, the iX debuts BMW’s iDrive 8, combining a 12.3‑inch digital instrument cluster with a 14.9‑inch curved infotainment screen as a single unit. It offers a refined sound system, driver assistance tech, and a strong emphasis on connectivity, including built‑in 5G for software updates over the air. The iX comes with advanced safety and driver‑assistance features and a premium interior package with options like Bowers & Wilkins or Harman Kardon audio, panoramic sunroof, and heated/ventilated seats.
Variants and timeline
The iX is available in different powertrains, including the xDrive40 and xDrive50 versions, with a high‑performance iX M60 announced later. A facelift for the 2026 model year improved range, power and efficiency, along with styling tweaks. It has earned strong safety ratings, including a 5‑star Euro NCAP rating.
Autonomy and autonomy tech
BMW designed the iX to excel in tech and connectivity, with extensive driver‑assistance features. While BMW discussed Level 3 capabilities in the broader iNext concept, the iX primarily offers Level 2+ automation, with ongoing software updates to expand features over time.
