Athletics at the 1988 Summer Paralympics was held from 17 to 27 October at Jamsil Olympic Stadium and the nearby Auxiliary Stadium. About 1,141 competitors from 57 nations took part, with 345 events in athletics. Because of ties for third place in two events, 347 bronze medals were awarded. There was also a tie for first place in the women’s 100 metres for class 5–6, and overall 345 gold medals and 344 silver medals were awarded. Bulgaria, Puerto Rico, South Korea, Thailand and Tunisia won their first ever Paralympic medals in athletics.
