As of Not
As of Not is a double-LP by American percussionist Jerome Cooper and Danish percussionist and pianist Kresten Osgood. It was recorded in 2011 in Copenhagen during Cooper’s visit for symposia, masterclasses, and concerts, and released in 2020 by ILK Music (ILK296LP). The album features a seven-part percussion-centered suite written by Cooper.
Critics described the music as a powerful blend of spiritual jazz, ritual atmosphere, and experimental deconstruction. The Free Jazz Collective praised its immediate impact, noting that percussion is present but not overwhelming and that the work sits at a crossroads of spiritual jazz, genre-blending, and contemporary experimentation. The New York City Jazz Record highlighted mood shifts within the pieces, including drones, a balafon motif, chirimira, wandering piano lines, and electronic rhythm, and said Cooper and Osgood make a strong, united team working toward a universal sound. All compositions are by Jerome Cooper.
