Arnoldo Ferreto Segura was a Costa Rican politician and a leader of the Popular Vanguard Party (PVP). He was born on July 25, 1910, in Heredia Centro and grew up there. He studied at the Escuela Normal de Costa Rica and worked as a teacher. He joined the Communist Party of Costa Rica. In 1934, he was jailed after a banana workers’ strike, and he later spent 16 years on the Heredia municipal council. After the 1948 civil war, he was jailed again. He was elected to Parliament from Puntarenas Province in 1974 and re-elected in 1982. In November 1983, at the PVP’s third congress, Ferreto Segura and Humberto Vargas Carbonell led a purge of Manuel Mora Valverde’s followers, taking a harder line. Mora Valverde refused the post of honorary chairman, and Segura became party chairman. He died on March 8, 1996, in San José.
