Structural road design

Structural road design makes a road strong enough to carry the expected traffic for a chosen service life. Calculations start with the total number of vehicles (for example 10,000,000) split by vehicle type (trucks, vans, cars) over the period the road should last before major renewal (for example 20 years). Maintenance will occur during this period, but it is planned and kept low. For asphalt roads, the Shell pavement design method is commonly used.
