Mosque of Abu Ubaidah Amer ibn al-Jarrah
Mosque of Abu Ubaidah Amer ibn al-Jarrah is a mosque and mausoleum in Deir Alla, Balqa, Jordan. It is built over the believed tomb of Abu Ubayda ibn al-Jarrah, a companion of the Prophet Muhammad and a Rashidun military commander who died in 639 CE. His burial site is in the area of present-day Jordan.
In the 13th century, the Mamluk ruler Baybars erected a domed mausoleum with an attached mosque over the grave. From 1946 to 1954, the Hashemite Kingdom rebuilt the complex into a larger, modern structure at the government’s request. Some inscriptions from the old Mamluk period remain inside the building.
The complex includes a library and an Islamic museum, as well as residences for the imam and the muezzin, a multi-purpose hall, and a VIP area. There is a large cemetery outside, which currently has too few burial plots because many people want to be buried near the revered figure.
Technical details: the mosque can hold about 3,000 worshipers, covers about 6,500 square meters, and features one dome and one minaret. The tomb attributed to Abu Ubayda is believed by many, but not universally accepted.
