Description
Armatocereus procerus grows like a small tree, usually without a clear trunk, and can reach up to about 7 meters in height. Its upright shoots are dark green to grey-green and divided into segments with eight to ten ribs, each with large areoles. The plant has 1–4 central yellowish spines with darker tips up to 10 cm long, and 15–20 radial spines up to 2 cm long. The white flowers are up to 7 cm long and about 5 cm in diameter. The fruits are green and up to 7 cm long.
Distribution
This cactus is native to southern Peru, specifically the Ancash, Lima, and Ica regions.
Conservation
Armatocereus procerus is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN.
Taxonomy
The species was first described by Werner Rauh and Curt Backeberg in 1956 (published in 1957). It belongs to the genus Armatocereus in the cactus family.
