Area codes 702 and 725
Area codes 702 and 725 serve Clark County, including Las Vegas, in Nevada. 702 is one of the original North American area codes, created in 1947, and it initially covered the entire state. In 1998 Nevada was split: most of the state got 775, while 702 remained for Las Vegas and nearby areas. In 2014, 725 was added as an overlay to the same region, so ten-digit dialing is now required for all local calls. There was talk of a special, easily recognizable code like 777, but that didn’t happen.
Despite growth, the 702/725 area is not close to running out of numbers. Projections have varied: in 2017 the region wasn’t expected to need another code until about 2045 at the earliest; in 2019 there was no exhaust date; by 2021 the forecast moved to 2055.
