Aspect (geography)

Aspect, or exposure, is the compass direction that a slope or coastline faces. For example, a slope on the eastern edge of the Rockies facing the Great Plains has an easterly aspect. A slope where the western side drops into a deep valley and the eastern side is gentler is a westerly (west-facing) aspect. The direction a slope faces can influence its climate and living things, a pattern called the slope effect. Aspect can also describe how a coastline is oriented toward the sea; for instance, a coastline facing northeast, like much of Queensland, has a northeasterly aspect.

Along with how steep a surface is (its grade), aspect helps determine the surface gradient. Aspect also has a big effect on temperature. In the Northern Hemisphere, the south-facing side of a slope usually gets more sun and is warmer, while the north-facing side stays cooler and more shaded. These differences are stronger on steeper slopes and farther from the equator, especially in winter. Because of this, west-facing slopes are often warmer in the afternoon, which can influence where trees grow and how moisture is distributed.

Examples show how important aspect can be. In the Swiss Alps, farming is more common on south-facing slopes. In the Himalayas, south-facing slopes are warm and forested, while north-facing slopes are cold and often heavily glaciated. In Australia, rainforest remnants are frequently found on east-facing slopes that are shielded from dry westerly winds.

Aspect also affects soils. Soils differ between sunward (toward the equator) and shadeward (toward the poles) sides: sunward slopes tend to be drier and have different organic matter levels than cooler, moister poleward slopes. Wind patterns add another layer: windward sides may have thinner soils, while leeward sides can accumulate particles and develop differently. In tropical regions, the combination of sun and wind near the afternoon can create strong, location-specific differences in soil moisture and biology.

Overall, aspect is a key factor shaping local climate, vegetation, and soil patterns on mountains and coastlines.
