Rhode Island Department of Public Safety

Formed in 2008, the Rhode Island Department of Public Safety (DPS) is the state’s main agency for police and public safety matters. It oversees eight units: Rhode Island State Police; Division of the Rhode Island State Fire Marshal; Rhode Island Municipal Police Training Academy; E-9-1-1 Uniform Emergency Telephone System; Rhode Island Capitol Police; Rhode Island Division of Sheriffs; Department of Public Safety Central Management Office; and Public Safety Grants Administration Office.

Headquarters are in Providence, Rhode Island. The Commissioner leads the department and also serves as the Superintendent of the Rhode Island State Police. DPS is responsible for all police and public safety affairs in Rhode Island.

Current Commissioner: Colonel Darnell S. Weaver. The first Commissioner was Colonel Brendan Doherty.
