DizzyFIX
The DizzyFIX is a home medical device that helps treat benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), a common cause of dizziness. Worn on the head, it looks like a model of the inner ear’s semicircular canals and contains fluid with a small particle that represents the crystals (otoconia) involved in BPPV. The device serves as a visual guide to perform the particle repositioning maneuver, also known as the Epley maneuver.
BPPV causes spinning dizziness that starts with certain head positions and lasts a short time. The Dix-Hallpike test is used to diagnose BPPV by provoking a specific eye movement called rotatory nystagmus.
DizzyFIX was developed by ear specialists to help people with recurrent BPPV perform the maneuver correctly at home. BPPV often recurs, with many people experiencing repeat episodes. Some studies suggest home treatment can be safe and effective when properly taught, but failures are often due to not performing the maneuver correctly. The DizzyFIX aims to help users perform the maneuver correctly, and research shows its use is associated with a correct particle repositioning maneuver.
