Angel Sanctuary
Angel Sanctuary is a Japanese manga created by Kaori Yuki. It follows Setsuna Mudo, a 16-year-old student who loves his 15-year-old sister Sara. He learns that he is the reincarnation of Alexiel, a powerful angel who rebelled against Heaven. As angels and demons clash, Setsuna and Sara become caught in a web of political maneuvering, forbidden love, and fate.
The series ran in the shōjo magazine Hana to Yume from 1994 to 2000, collected into 20 volumes. An English-language edition was released by Viz Media between 2004 and 2007. The story drew on many mythologies and religious themes, and it features a large cast of androgynous angels and demons. Angel Sanctuary was also adapted into three drama CDs and a three-episode OVA released in 2000, with Yuki helping on the adaptations. A sequel, Angel Sanctuary: Tokyo Chronos, began in 2022 and continued in Hana Yume Ai, planned to end with five volumes in 2026.
Plot in simple terms: Setsuna discovers he is the vessel for Alexiel, a holy being who fought against God and was imprisoned. Her twin brother Rosiel is a dangerous, growing threat. The saga weaves grand conflicts between heaven and hell with intimate, forbidden love between Setsuna and Sara, who becomes entangled in soul journeys, reincarnations, and shifting loyalties. Time and reality twist and bend as characters search for safety, meaning, and a way to be together. In the end, the story centers on the power of love and the struggle to mend a broken world.
Angel Sanctuary is known for its lush, intricate artwork and its dense, adult themes. It has been praised for its detailed art and its willingness to blur the lines between good and evil, showing both sides with flaws and strengths. The manga’s heavy focus on forbidden love and its complex plot can be challenging, but many readers find its mythic world, dramatic twists, and emotional depth very compelling. The OVA and drama CDs offered additional ways to experience the story, though some critics felt the anime adaptation didn’t always capture the manga’s full complexity or tone. The series has inspired art books, music related to the title, and a dedicated fanbase around its gothic, mythic vision.
