The herring market (silakkamarkkinat in Finnish, strömmingsmarknad in Swedish) is a yearly event in Finland, mainly held in Helsinki in October. Archipelago residents come to Helsinki’s South Harbour to sell herring and other sea products directly from their boats. The city of Helsinki organizes it. Finland’s first herring fair was in Turku in 1636. Helsinki’s fair began in 1743, and by 1820 it had settled at the South Harbour. The event faded at times, but it was revived in the 1980s and has become very popular again. Another notable fair is in Rauma.
