Andrés Acuña
Andrés Acuña Araya, born September 11, 1995, in San José, Costa Rica, is a top Costa Rican racquetball player. He won the gold medal at the 2022 World Games in Birmingham, Alabama—the first World Games racquetball gold by a player from outside North America. He also claimed the 2024 Pan American Racquetball Championships title in Guatemala City in men’s doubles, partnering with Gabriel Garcia.
On the world stage, Acuña was the runner-up in the 2021 IRF World Championships in men’s singles in Guatemala City. He earned a bronze medal in singles at the 2022 World Championships in San Luis Potosí, and has competed in doubles with his brother Sergio Acuña.
Acuña has collected medals in Pan American and regional events as well. He won bronze in men’s doubles at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, paired with Felipe Camacho. At the 2019 Pan American Racquetball Championships in Barranquilla, he won bronze in both singles and doubles. In the 2018 Central American and Caribbean Games, he took bronze in singles and silver in both doubles and the team event. At the 2023 CAC Games, he earned four medals: bronze in singles, silver in doubles with Gabriel Garcia, bronze in mixed doubles with Maricruz Ortiz, and silver in the team event.
Acuña also carried Costa Rica’s flag at the opening ceremony of the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, where he competed in singles, doubles, mixed doubles, and the men’s team event; his best finish was a bronze in doubles with Garcia.
Over more than a decade, Acuña has represented Costa Rica and won more than 20 medals, rising in the international rankings and highlighting Costa Rican racquetball on the world stage.
