Neil George Safety System, also known as the 5-Point Safety System, is a safety program used in underground mining. It was created in 1942 by Canadian engineer Neil George, who worked for Inco in Sudbury, Ontario. The system has five steps: Steps 1–3 are completed by the worker and verified by the supervisor when they arrive at the job. Step 4 is a safety discussion between the worker and the supervisor. Step 5 is the worker confirming they have the proper training, experience, and motivation to work safely, which the supervisor also verifies before the worker leaves. Similar pre-task risk checks exist in many places under different names, with "Take 5 for Safety" being a common term. The system is used in Canada and worldwide.
