André Cayatte
André Cayatte (3 February 1909 – 6 February 1989) was a French filmmaker, writer and lawyer known for movies about crime, justice and moral responsibility. He was born in Carcassonne, France, and died in Paris at age 80. During the German occupation, he began directing at the Continental Films studio. His early notable films include Justice est faite (1950), Nous sommes tous des assassins (1952), and Le passage du Rhin (1960); he won Golden Lion awards for Justice est faite (1950) and Le Passage du Rhin (1960). In 1963, he did a two-film experiment showing the same story from two viewpoints: Jean-Marc ou La vie conjugale and Françoise ou La vie conjugale. In 1973 his film There’s No Smoke Without Fire won the Silver Bear Special Jury Prize at the Berlin International Film Festival. His younger brother was the film editor Paul Cayatte.
